BARBARA DEERING

It all started when...

Growing up on Chicago’s south side, I was fortunate to have a rich exposure to theater, movies, opera... you name it, it was there. And I was born fascinated by music, theater, dance and the visual arts. I played piano, sang, took all manner of dancing lessons, painted at Chicago’s Art Institute and had my first acting class at about 4 years old.

As a teen, I did small roles in shows with a local theater group and worked with my high school productions taking my first leading roll as ‘Rosie’ in ‘Bye Bye Birdie’, a total game changer for me.

Reluctantly continuing my formal education, I majored in Dramatic Arts at Illinois Wesleyan University. There, however, I had the thrilling experience of studying under Harold Guskin. He has been by far my most influential teacher, showing me a side to my craft that made my work come from a much more satisfying place.

As a young musician in the late sixty’s and early seventy’s, I worked with a British rock band and performed throughout England, Wales, France and Spain. This was an exciting time to be involved in rock and roll and although that sounds like a wild ride, we were a mild mannered, well educated group and serious about our work. I have very fond memories from that time and learned invaluable lessons that I don’t believe I could have learned elsewhere.

Although I focused a long time on the musical side of my career, even owning my own music store and music school for several years, acting has always been my first love.

I am now based in the Pacific Northwest where I have been involved in multiple stage, television and film productions. I am grateful and honored to have done the work I have accomplished and continue to act, teach, dance, paint and enjoy my family in this beautiful part of the country.
